Program Profile

Research in the PhD program of the Department of Industrial Engineering focuses on understanding current problems in manufacturing and service industries and large-scale socio-technical systems, developing models and solution methods, and providing decision support. The department offers a strong background in modeling and optimization, simulation and probability/statistics. On top of this background, students have the opportunity to specialize in the following three interdisciplinary focus areas Sustainability: Producing products and services using processes that do not pollute the environment, conserve natural resources and energy, are economically viable, and are safe and healthy for workers, society and consumers. Disaster Management: Providing analysis, modeling and scientific decision support in the management of natural and man-made disasters (e.g. earthquakes, landslides and terrorism) to contribute to improving the resilience of governments, organizations and companies. Health Systems: To improve efficiency, productivity and patient access in health systems by developing tools, methodologies and protocols that enable the delivery of safe, efficient and cost-effective health care with improved outcomes.
