History
Abdullah Gül University was officially established with the Higher Education Institutions Organization Law and the "Law on Amendments to Certain Laws and Decree Laws" published in the Official Gazette dated July 21, 2010. AGU Civil Engineering Department accepted its first students to the Preparatory School in the 2013-2014 academic year and started its undergraduate education in the 2014-2015 academic year with 100% English as the medium of instruction. Education started in the AGÜ Sümer Campus, which was restored and transformed from the area of the old Sümerbank Cloth Factory, one of the first industrial complexes of the Republic of Turkey, and continues on the same campus. The strategic structure of the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program, including its vision, mission, distinctive features, goals, curriculum structure, methodological approach in education and training, and priority areas in research activities were created with the "AGU Civil Engineering Department Future Design Workshop" held on March 7, 2015, with the participation of academic, sectoral and non-governmental stakeholders, while the first students were still taking faculty common courses in their first year. The ideas and opinions created with the common sense approach in the workshop were tried to be reflected in the qualities of the department and program. Educational activities, which started with a total of four faculty members and a quota of 20 students, are currently continuing with a total of 8 faculty members, including 3 Professors, 2 Associate Professors and 3 Doctoral Faculty Members, and 221 students, including the preparatory class. A total of 8 research assistants, three of whom have doctoral degrees, support educational activities. While there was a single department called "Civil Engineering Department" at the beginning of education, on February 28, 2017, five separate departments were created, namely Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Mechanics, Transportation and Structure, and education and research activities continued. Our laboratory equipment and students' experimental studies have an important place in order to achieve the educational goals and program outcomes of our department. AGU Civil Engineering Department has a total of 651 m2 laboratory area equipped with state-of-the-art devices that can be used effectively in both research and education. Our department offers modern education with active learning approaches such as learning by using new technology special training sets and laboratory equipment, learning by design, peer learning and self-learning. Three separate education plans have been implemented since the 2014-2015 academic year, when the undergraduate program first started after the preparatory class. The first plan is the curriculum implemented for our students who started their undergraduate education in the department in 2014 and 2015. The second plan was made in 2016 and this curriculum covers our students who started their undergraduate education in our department in 2016-2020. The reason for creating this plan is the "Workplace Experience" course, which is a long internship added to the 8th semester of the program. Thus, our department's undergraduate program has been reshaped as seven semesters (3.5 years) of university education and one semester of workplace experience. During their undergraduate education, students spend the entire semester in public and private institutions in the construction sector outside the university, with the "Workplace Experience" course they will take in the spring semester of their fourth year. This approach increases their opportunities to continue their careers in companies or other organizations where they gain workplace experience after graduation by taking part in potential job fields before graduation. The last curriculum change was made in 2021, due to some changes requested by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) from universities and departments (adding the CP100 Career Planning course, updating the training hours of courses such as internships, etc.) resulting in the need to make changes to the ECTS credits of other department courses. The Department's "Horizontal/Vertical Transfer, Double Major/Minor Programs, Adjustment and Graduation Commission" checks whether each student who has graduated has met the above conditions through the student information system. Later, after the final checks are made by the chief student affairs officer through the automation system, the relevant Deputy Dean makes the necessary inspections and ensures that the student's graduation is placed on the agenda of the Board of Directors. Following the decision of the Board of Directors, graduation certificates are prepared after the graduation approval of the chief student affairs officer through the student information system. One of the other issues regarding graduation conditions is that the graduation diploma is given to the student who is continuing the second major undergraduate program only if he/she graduates from the first major diploma program he/she continues.

While all these processes are being carried out, all courses taken, internships and programs attended by the student throughout his education life at Abdullah Gül University are carried out and recorded through computer software and automation systems. All other operations such as counting, credit calculation, and creating conjugates are carried out within the scope of regulations, directives, principles of application, and senate decisions and are processed into the student system. For graduation procedures, course grades, internship statuses and other situations, if any, are first checked by the "Horizontal/Vertical Transfer, Double Major/Minor Programs, Adjustment and Graduation Commission" through this system, and then the final checks are made by the chief student affairs officer through the automation system. Afterwards, the student's graduation is placed on the agenda of the Board of Directors after the relevant Deputy Dean makes the necessary investigations. During all these transactions, different commissions and boards carry out the necessary examinations.
