Type of Program Formal Education
Type of Course Unit Elective
Course Delivery Method Face To Face
Objectives of the Course Teaching material properties of steel and industrial steel structures
Applying the horizontal and vertical loads affecting industrial steel structures and related codes, standards
Selecting structural steel profiles and steel structures' connection types
Designing cross sections, tension, compression, and brace members of industrial steel structures
Course Content This course covers properties of steel as a structural material, profiles used in industrial steel structures, design of tensile, compression, and bending members, and design of joint elements. This course also shows the advantages of using steel in the design of industrial structures through examples.
Course Methods and Techniques Learners will be provided with as much opportunities of making practice as possible with the aim of striking a balance between learner-centeredness and sufficient guidance via examples, homework, quizzes etc. Various forms of interaction (i.e. pair work and group work) will also be encouraged to cater for learners with different learning styles for active learning to take place. It is the students’ responsibility to participate actively in class practices on time. Additionally, individuals will be expected to produce both in-class writings and homework assignments in addition to the reading tasks, which will encourage them to reflect and think critically. Technology will also be incorporated into the classroom procedures in order to create a better learning environment especially during online teaching.
