Type of Program Formal Education
Type of Course Unit Compulsory
Course Delivery Method Face To Face
Objectives of the Course This course focuses on topics such as the general structure of the earth, geological cycles, minerals and rocks, external processes in terrestrial and marine environments, and internal processes including rock deformation and earthquakes. The aim is for students to gain an understanding of the general types of earth materials, earth structures, and earth events, and how this knowledge relates to Civil Engineering.
Course Content Plate tectonics and earthquakes
• Materials forming the Earth's crust
• Rock classification and uses
• Engineering properties of rocks and discontinuities / mass movements and stability of rock slopes
• Dam-tunnel geology / nuclear and wind turbines, selection of foundation locations / engineering geological maps / groundwater / karst structures / drainage / environmental geology
• Geology-engineering geology and geotechnical investigations
Course Methods and Techniques • Understanding the Earth's structure and internal layers
• Distinguishing different rock types and learning about rock formation processes
• Understanding the Earth's internal (plate tectonics, earthquakes) and external (weathering, mass movements) processes
• Understanding the hydrological cycle, surface and groundwater, and related concepts
• Using topographic and geological maps, and learning how to draw relevant profiles and geological cross-sections
