Objectives of the Course Emphasizing the fundamental principles required for an understanding of the fundamental properties of engineering materials.
Clarifying the significance of these principles in engineering practice.
Giving an ability to select the proper materials depending on the conditions of use and to design them using material science knowledge.
Presenting an insight on the relationships between internal structure and properties of materials.
Course Content This course provides fundamental knowledge for understanding the properties and behavior of engineering materials, which is crucial for achievement of the structural safety, serviceability and the economics of the engineering projects. The course covers the following topics; the structure of matter; interatomic bonding, structural imperfections, concepts of force, stress, deformation and strain; elasticity; elastic and plastic behavior; viscosity; rheological models. Creep, relaxation, brittleness, ductility, hardness, fatigue, toughness, resilience, and damping characteristics of materials.
Course Methods and Techniques The learning process is supported through lectures, problem-solving activities, laboratory sessions, and the evaluation of student performance by midterm exams, quizzes and final exam.
