Objectives of the Course This course provides a comprehensive overview of computer networks and mobile communications technologies. The topics include computer networks, Internet, TCP/IP, transport layer protocols, routing layer protocols, medium access control protocols, wireless channel models, cellular networks and wireless local area networks. After completing the course, students will get a basic understanding about the computer networks and mobile communications, and related problem solving discipline using mathematics / engineering principles.
Course Content • An overview of computer networks • Internet and TCP/IP • Transport layer protocols • Routing layer protocols • MAC layer protocols • Wireless Channel Models • Queuing Theory • Network and mobility management • Wireless Local Area Networks • Cellular Networks • Wireless Ad Hoc Networks • Cross Layer Protocols and Review
Course Methods and Techniques Learners will be provided with as many opportunities of hands-on practice as possible
with the aim of striking a balance between learner-centeredness and sufficient
guidance. Various forms of interaction (i.e. pair work and group work) will also be
encouraged to cater for learners with different learning styles.
Additionally, individuals will be expected to produce both in-class writings and
homework assignments in addition to the reading tasks, which will encourage them to
reflect and think critically. Technology will also be incorporated into the
classroom procedures in order to create a better learning environment.
