Department / Program MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND GENETICS
Type of Program Formal Education
Type of Course Unit Compulsory
Course Delivery Method Face To Face
Objectives of the Course O1: To help students apply methods from bioinformatics to biological research
O2: To introduce databases containing primary and derived data
O3: To show how to find and use relevant bioinformatics tools and resources
Course Content This course is designed to introduce students to bioinformatics tools and analysis methods and therefore is a hands-on type. Most weeks will include both classroom lecture and computer lab time. Upon completion of the course, the students should be comfortable with handling biological data and online tools that are relevant to their research. The topics include databases, sequence alignment, homology search, phylogenetic trees, and structure prediction.
Course Methods and Techniques The course will be taught through face-to-face theoretical lectures and computer laboratory applications. Students will be supported with case studies, group work and individual assignments. Lectures, discussions, problem solving and project-based learning methods will be used.
