This course reviews the chemistry of living systems emphasising on topics of biotechnological and biomedical interest. The course also surveys the methods used in modern biochemistry, so that students ae to able to understand the connection among empirical data, the established facts and concepts presented in the course. The first part of the course focus on the structure-function relation in proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, and membranes. Important chemical concepts relevant to these molecules such as water, pH and weak chemical interactions is reviewed. This is followed by enzyme kinetics, pathways of intermediary metabolism, DNA replication, recombination, repair, transcription and protein synthesis.
