Objectives of the Course Describe the evolution of the conservation theory beginning from antiquity till today;
Discuss the parameters, concepts and terminology related with conservation;
Analyze the process of interpretation and preservation of cultural assets considering social, economic and political concerns.
Criticize reflections of the conservation theory and principles on the conservation approaches and implementations in different countries including Turkey
Course Content This course provides a theoretical basis for graduate students who is interested in conservation of cultural heritage. It contains historical development of the concept and theory of conservation and conservation principles and basic concepts and terminology in conservation. It aims to discuss definition values in conservation considering in various scales of cultural assets such as architectural heritage, urban heritage, archeological heritage and cultural landscape. This course explores diverse parameters in conservation by using practices in different countries and examine contemporary extents of to reach a comprehensive theoretical approach relevant for Turkey.
Course Methods and Techniques Classes are conducted through discussions based on weekly topics and selected readings. Each week, students are expected to individually bring an example of a conservation project that can be discussed in relation to the assigned reading. After the discussion, each student is expected to present their selected project and engage in a topic-focused discussion with their peers.
