Course Methods and Techniques
|
Students in Psychology are offered this course as a departmental seminar to provide in-depth information related to mood disorders. Different types of teaching methods will be adopted within the scope of this course. The following are the details;
Reaction paper You will write 5 reaction papers (each maximum one page) for some particular weeks throughout the semester. The topics for your reaction paper will be provided to you in advance. As part of this assignment, you are expected to be actively engaged in the course readings to contribute to group discussions in class. In your reaction paper, you are encouraged to ask questions about the readings, as well as assess their strengths and weaknesses critically. In order to determine the grade, consideration will be given to the depth of thought, originality, and quality of writing.
Discussion Leadership The co-discussion leader role will be assigned to each student in chosen weeks throughout the semester. The purpose of this assignment is to co-lead a discussion on a particular topic based on the class readings. Another purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your comprehension of the material and to act as a class leader. Throughout the discussion, you should lead your classmates in a way that engages them in the material. The discussion questions you wish to ask should be prepared in advance and emailed to Lecturer Şakir YILMAZ one day prior to the class. Make a list of at least eight to ten discussion questions. Facilitation that generates discussion and debate is considered to be a good example of good facilitation.
Class participation and attendance You are expected to participate actively and thoughtfully during class sessions. In order to participate effectively in class activities, students should arrive prepared for class. In general, you will not be penalized for missing one class, but you will need to consult with the course instructor if you miss more than one class.
Final research paper As part of this course, you will be required to submit a 3000 words research proposal in which you propose a study that will contribute to a better understanding of any aspect of mood disorders. Consider a topic that is closely related to the readings in this course. Important qualities in the paper will be depth of thinking, clarity of arguments, and ability to analyze and synthesize a range of resources. It is essential that the paper demonstrate depth of thinking, clarity of arguments, as well as the ability to synthesize and analyze a variety of sources. As part of your proposal, you will need to use previous research in the area to assist you in developing your idea in terms of the design, however you should not attempt to replicate an existing study exactly.
Final presentation You are required to present your final research paper as apart of this course. It is recommended that your presentation lasts between fifteen to twenty minutes.
