Objectives of the Course O1. Describe life’s underlying chemical composition: electrons, protons, neutrons, atoms, bonds; emergent characteristics of water and pH scale major classes of macromolecules
O2. Catalog and contrast the structures that comprise prokaryotic, animal, and plant cells.
O3. Describe the cellular basis of energy conversion, enzymatic promotion of chemical reactions, and transport across selectively permeable membranes, cellular respiration and photosynthesis
O4. Describe the roles of cellular reproduction in living cells, including the processes and outcomes of mitosis and meiosis, simple Mendelian inheritance patterns and some common variations
O5. Describe how the structure of DNA relates to its functions of self-replication and the flow of genetic information through the cell
Course Content This is an introductory course in biology together with the practical laboratory section. This course will provide students the background knowledge to take more advanced biology courses but will also be useful to understand biological principles for everyday life. The course will cover multiple areas of biological organization, from tiny atoms to biological molecules. Students in this course will discover biological processes, cycles and properties that are key to the study of life. The students will learn the process of scientific thinking and basic biological experimentation techniques required to test the biological concepts that involves topics such as; molecules, enzymes, basic biological processes, and cell structure and division.
