Objectives of the Course This course will introduce new interdisciplinary area of study named “molecular medicine” that explores revolutionary developments in disease diagnosis, therapy and prevention, which is allowed by bio-molecular research.
Course Content It shows how basic science is translated from ‘theory to the clinic.’ It covers advances in the personalised medicine that allowed the understanding of the disease mechanisms at cellular level, opening up new ways to treat major illnesses. The course’s main focus includes cancer, genetics, novel drugs (mechanisms).
Course Methods and Techniques Lectures, particular talks by prominent scientists, quizzes, patient cases, articles will be included within the course content. Additionally, each student (as an individual or within groups ) is responsible from presenting an article in front of the class.

Resources
Lectures and some of the notes (on papers) would be shared. Some of the highlights regarding course content was indicated below.
Some of the highlights of the subjects included ...

Infant/62 year old died/affected due to undiagnosed pharmacogenetic marker

Keytruda: It was the first time that FDA approved a drug not based on cancer origin/site, but on biomarkers & (immunotherapy)

Patisiran: It was the first time that FDA approved a drug which shows RNA-interference (RNAi) pathway is druggable

Casgevy: It was the first time that FDA approved a CRISPR based therapy (sickle cell & thalessemia)
Use of induced Pluripotent Stem Cells and proof of concept example for gene therapy for disease treatment (sickle cell disease in a mouse model)
Economic Burden of Cancer (potential productive life lost...)

Hallmarks and Enabling Characteristics (Weinberg & Hanahan)

Tumor micro environment, TME (accessories to the crime)

Dysregulated apoptotic components/mechanisms in cancer

Nonmutational epigenetic reprogramming plays role in the carcinogenesis.

CRISPR loss-of-function libraries are being used to understand mechanisms of 'drug metabolism and/or resistance' (Cytarabine & Venetoclax (BCL2-inhibitor)).

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
NoLearning Outcomes
1 To develop perspective in molecular medicine, enabling students to grasp relationship between a disease and drug's mechanism (at cellular and/or organismic levels).
2 To expand the knowledge on disease pathophysiology, and particularly using cancer as a model (reference).
3 To cultivate interest in biomarker-based novel (and/or recently approved) drugs, since medicine is becoming more and more personalised.
