Course Content
|
This class has been designed to introduce a brief history of Modern Turkey to international students via explaining the basic historical roots of the current Turkish society. In the second semester of this course, the instructor will focus on the establishment and successive history of the Turkish Republic. In this sense, he will mainly discuss how the Ottoman Empire whose multi-ethnic and multi-religious social structure has been ruled by a single family for about 600 years transformed to a national state which claimed its sovereignty against an imperialist occupation. Then, the instructor will narrate emergence of the single party rule and establishment of a modern society in the 1920s and 1930s and then transition to multi-party system and economic, social, and political transformations between 1940s and 200s alongside with establishment of secular institutions and their transformations and spread of the notions of citizenships, rights and liberties in the Turkish society. Around such themes, the major political, economic, and social events will be discussed with students
