This course examines the dynamics of democratization in developing countries, emphasizing the role of civil society and the representation of people. The first part of the course focuses on contemporary institutional changes and academic debates on democratization, governance and citizenship in the Global South. Lessons and readings point to the global expansion of official democracy and neoliberal governance, as well as the prevalence of depoliticisation and the flaw of popular representation and participation.
