Objectives of the Course
|
Beyond contributing to the general development of students’ intellectual maturity and abilities, the more specific objectives of the course include: LO1: Introducing different perspectives on world politics; LO2: Examining the basic assumptions, conceptual and theoretical insights offered by different traditions; LO3: Enabling students to develop a critical understanding of world politics; LO4: Presenting the complexity of the social world and how different assumptions about the world politics, results in different perspectives; LO5: Showing how the field of International Relations is constructed as a field of study and its implications on the practice; LO6: Presenting the strengths and weaknesses of using theory and how contemporary debates and new avenues strive to deal with the weaknesses in the theories.

Course Content
|
This is an introductory course for International Relations theories. The aim is to provide an in-depth overview of major traditions in the field of International Relations and contemporary debates on theorizing international relations. To this end, the course seeks to familiarize students with the key concepts, themes, and assumptions about world politics. The course specifically focuses on the different traditions to show the theoretical richness of the field.

Course Methods and Techniques
|
The course is based on lecturing, in-class and online discussions and asynchronous concept talks. During the face-to-face meetings, the lecturer will introduce the topic and explain the core concepts of the matter. Students are encouraged to ask questions any time during the lecture. Furthermore, there will be small in-class discussions. Students are also expected to engage in online discussion through the questions posted in CANVAS. For the asynchronous part (Concept Talk videos), the lecturer will post videos that explore concepts and debates that have either not covered or superficially mentioned during the lecture in-depth. However, the content of the videos is not strict and can be arranged according to students needs and wishes. Therefore, students are encouraged to send their questions on the issues that they would like to explore more.
