Based on UN (2010), today every 5 people of 10 people in the planet live in cities, this figure expected to rise to seven in every 10 people by 2050. This means 6.25 billions of the 9.3 of billions of people will live in urban areas in 2050s. As the urban planners, architects, policy makers and academics we have to deal with the unprecedented problems of the global urbanisation in the coming decades. Therefore, this lecture focuses on the challenges of the global urbanisation. By using global examples in this lecture, we will critically analyse and discuss the challenges of urbanisation under three main categories; namely socio-economic, political, and environmental challenges. Under the socio-economic challenges we will explore concepts such as: economic development and urbanisation, informal housing and affordable housing policies. Under the political challenges chapter, we will critically analyse the concepts such as global cities, migration and urban citizenship and right to city. Moreover, the environmental challenges chapter will focus on evaluation of the climate change and the city, urban footprint and urban resilience. The module will not only focus on the challenges but also the last two lectures of the module will examine the key strategies in order to deal with these global problems.
