Investigating the different interpretations of works of art. Identifying the significance of context and patronage in the development of Islamic art and architecture. Examining variety of artwork in different geographies. Course Content This course is open for all students interested in Islamic art and architecture, by understanding them in relationship with faith, power and daily life practices across different geographies. Muslim societies produced different forms of art for centuries in different parts of the Afro-Eurasian world from Spain to south-east Asia. The variety of production include architecture at different scales to textiles, manuscript ornaments to ceramics and metalworks. This course explores Islamic art and architecture by referring to their meanings, symbolism and iconography in relation to their contextual background each week.
