This course introduces the laws of thermodynamics for designing thermo-fluid systems. The course covers the following topics: basic concepts, thermo-physical properties of pure substances, ideal and real gases, energy analysis of closed systems, mass and energy analysis of open systems, second law of thermodynamics, reversible and irreversible processes, third law of thermodynamics, entropy change of pure substances, entropy change of ideal gases, adiabatic efficiency of some engines, exergy and second law solutions. The objectives of this course are to model thermodynamic systems; to calculate the thermo-physical properties of pure substances; to analyze the energy conversion processes in closed and open systems; to compute the entropy changes in thermodynamic processes; and to develop the problem-solving skills essential to engineering practice of thermodynamics in real-world applications.
