Objectives of the Course The objective of this course is to provide for students of political science a theoretically informed analysis of Turkish political life since the single party period. It is the intention of this course to emphasize the interplay between state, society, culture, economy and international forces in the modernization and democratization process in Turkey.
Course Content This course will analyze the political reform process as well as the challenges in institution-building and democratization at mass and elite levels in Turkey. We will focus a wide range topics that shape the Turkish political life, including the multi-party politics, political economy, political parties, economy, the military, the EU, gender, migration and so on.
Course Methods and Techniques This course uses a mixed teaching technique consisting of lectures and in-class activities. Each week, one session s is devoted to in-class activities following a two-hour lecture. Students are assigned tasks according to the topic of the week. Students are expected to apply theoretical and historical knowledge through activities such as class discussion around a topic, group presentations and debate.
