Objectives of the Course The aim of this course is to to inspire an informed interest in world affairs and to equip students to succeed in upper-year and graduate international political economy/international relations courses.
Course Content This course focuses upon the relationship between economics and politics on a global scale. It considers the evolution of the global political economy through several historical eras (1400-1800s, 19th and 20th centuries) as well as the key concepts (trade, production, finance, development, environment, gender, labour, ideas, security and governance). Since this course is an introduction course, it surveys the main topics in the field. At the end of the class, students will also develop an appreciation of the key theoretical approaches to understanding the global political economy. The primary objectives are to inspire an informed interest in world affairs and to equip students to succeed in upper-year and graduate international political economy/international relations courses.
Course Methods and Techniques This course uses a hybrid teaching method, combining in-person and online learning. Techniques include lectures, discussions, and student-centered activities like weekly Padlet entries (13.5%), presentations (15%), and self-guided study (30%). Assessments focus on critical engagement, with a final paper (30%) and strict attendance policies (missing >9 hours results in failure). The approach blends theory (Robert O'Brien's textbook) with practical analysis of organizations like the IMF and WTO.
