Objectives of the Course This is a fundamental course related to reinforced concrete structures. Within this course, mechanical properties of structural concrete are first presented. Behavior of reinforced concrete elements under different natural and physical conditions are described. Design procedures are explained under normal, shear, moment and torsion forces/moments. In this respect, ultimate design of reinforced concrete elements is covered in detail. Design of such structural members as beams, slabs, columns and foundations are discussed. A brief introduction to Turkish Standard Reinforced Concrete Design and the codes related of the American Concrete Institute for reinforced concrete buildings are made.
Course Content This course, briefly, consist of general knowledge about building codes and structural concrete and steel mechanical properties, and also Load and Resistance Factor based design of Reinforced Concrete members such as flexural and shear design of beam members, required development length of steel bars in structural members, serviceability of members, and design of short and slender columns.
Course Methods and Techniques o Attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to attend at least %70 of the classes.
o Class attendance is strongly recommended and will count toward your participation grade. Regular class time will include informal assessment activities for which points will be assigned. Participation in these activities will help you prepare for exams, quizzes and homework and also provide me with feedback on your progress.
