Type of Program Formal Education
Type of Course Unit Compulsory
Course Delivery Method Face To Face
Objectives of the Course -to provide the knowledge and understanding of the engineering properties and behavior of soils
-to introduce the fundamental principles of engineering mechanics and civil engineering technology
-to conduct laboratory experiments to determine and critically evaluate soil properties
-to introduce the variability under multitude of conditions (time, loading, water flow) in order to build with the soil structures
Course Content Soil Mechanics is the branch of science that deals with the study of the physical properties of soil and the behavior of soil masses subjected to various types of forces. You examine the identification and classification of rocks and soils, the stresses that exist within a soil mass, soil deformation under loading and peculiarities of local soils. In particular, it is concerned with the interaction of structures with their foundation material. This includes both conventional structures and also structures such as earth dams, embankments and roads which are their-selves made of soil.

NoLearning Outcomes
1 -Identify, set-up and perform appropriate laboratory experiments on soils under varying conditions in accordance with established standard
2 Categorize soils according to standard methods, differentiate between their typical properties and effects of water
3 -Differentiate between total and effective stresses under changing loading and hydraulic/drainage conditions
4 -Apply the fundamental principles mechanics of soils affecting soil properties and behavior leading to proper estimation of shear strength
